How to Freeze Edamame

A highlight of late summer, the vibrant green edamame can be frozen for use year round

Ingredients

Fresh Edamame

Salt

Directions

Rinse off, then dump into boiling salted water for three minutes.  Begin timer as soon as the edamame are in the water, no need to wait for the water to boil again.  After 3 minutes, scoop or strain the edamame, and put under cold running water to stop any further cooking.  Once cool to touch, either freeze in the pod, or shell them out and freeze the beans.

To freeze in the pod, spread pods out on a towel and pat dry.  You can then freeze them in ziplock or airtight containers.

To freeze the edamame beans, shell the beans from the pods, and freeze in airtight bags or containers.

Shelled Edamame can be defrosted or used straight from the freezer.  Pods would be best defrosted before a quick warmup in microwave or on the stovetop.  For a speedy defrost, simply place frozen pods in a bowl of cold running water, and they’ll be ready to warm in just a few minutes.
